How Does Sleep Testing in Vero Beach Actually Work?

November 17, 2017

When you go to the doctor and you’re having a problem, you know they’re likely going to perform a few different tests. If you’re feeling pain anywhere, they might have you move around a bit, or if you’re sick, they may take a swab of your saliva to test it. But, what if you are having issues with your sleep? What can they do then? If you’re having problems that could be due to sleep apnea (such a cessations in your breathing during sleep or loud chronic snoring), then your doctor may recommend that you have a sleep study done. This can be used to rule out sleep apnea or give you a proper diagnosis. How do they work? What do they measure? How can you get one? Today, we share all you need to know about sleep testing in Vero Beach.

What is a Sleep Study?

A sleep study is a non-invasive medical test that enables a doctor to determine what happens to your body while you sleep. With it, they can learn how deep you are sleeping, how you’re breathing during the night, if you move around, and even if you’re clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth. Using the results of a sleep study, a trained sleep doctor can usually determine the root cause of a person’s sleeping issues and recommend treatment.

How Does a Sleep Study Work?

In most cases, your doctor will refer you to a sleep center where you’ll spend the night. A technician will hook you up to a variety of machines to monitor your brainwaves, heartbeat, and breathing. Although this doesn’t sound like the most comfortable sleeping environment, this is by far the best approach to learn about what happens while you’re catching a few z’s. The next morning, you’ll be disconnected from the machines and your doctor will analyze their readings. From there, they’ll be able to form a diagnosis and recommend any treatments you need for sleep apnea or any other issues they’ve found.

How Can I Get One?

If your bed partner has been complaining about your chronic snoring, or if you never feel rested in the morning despite getting a full night’s rest, a sleep study is probably a good idea for you. To get one, you should consult with your primary care physician and tell them about your sleep issues. From there, they’ll direct you to a sleep center to perform the test.

For many, a sleep test is their first step to waking up in the morning feeling energized again. It’s literally one night that could have a dramatic impact on not only your sleep, but your long term health as well. Before you contact your doctor, you can take our short sleep test so we can determine how at risk you are for having sleep apnea. It’s very short, and after you have completed it, our team will contact you within 24 hours to let you know what you should do next. From there, it’s only a matter of time before you’re able to rest easy again.
