Snoring Treatment Just in Time for the Holidays

November 28, 2018

No matter what your holiday traditions might be, you’re likely going to be spending a lot of time around friends and family in the coming weeks. If this involves staying anywhere overnight, and you snore, then you’re probably a bit worried. The last thing you want to do is keep your loved ones awake all night (especially if you only see some of them once a year)! Fortunately, snoring treatment in Jupiter doesn’t have to be that complicated. Just use the 4 tips below to ensure that you as well as everyone around you enjoys a restful holiday season.

1. Watch the Alcohol

Snoring occurs when the soft tissues in someone’s mouth and throat relax and partially block their airway during sleep. Air rushing past these tissues causes them to vibrate, creating that “iconic” snoring sound we all know and love. Drinking alcohol too close to bedtime can make someone much more likely to snore because it enables the oral muscles to actually over-relax. You can still have adult beverages this season, but be sure to stop drinking about 3 hours before bed to help keep your snoring in check.

2. Cut Back on Smoking

Whether you’re a regular smoker or plan on enjoying a few celebratory cigars, it’s best to pass on smoking of any kind a few hours before bed. Smoking irritates the lining of the throat and causes it to become inflamed, which naturally narrows the air passages and makes snoring more likely.

3. Try Sleeping on Your Side

When you sleep on your back, gravity makes it easier for your tongue and soft palate to collapse into your airway and cause snoring. An easy fix for this is to try to sleep on your side. To ensure that you stay in this position the entire night, you can tape or sew a tennis ball to your lower back. As you move throughout the night, this will encourage you to unconsciously stay on your side and snore less.

4. Talk to Your Doctor

There are many snoring appliances available on the market that are proven to work, and they usually come in the form of a small, custom-made mouthpiece. You wear it to bed, and it slightly adjusts the position of your lower jaw in order to keep the airway unobstructed, leading to a quiet and peaceful night for everyone. It’s best to get one through your doctor, as a generic snoring appliance may be uncomfortable and can even make snoring worse.

The holidays are already stressful enough without having to worry about snoring, but with these simple tips, you can rest easy this holiday season. Your friends and relatives will certainly appreciate it!
