Sleep test

If you have been exhibiting signs and symptoms of a sleep disorder, such as sleep apnea, your doctor may have recommended that you undergo sleep testing in Melbourne. This simple and noninvasive procedure can give your medical team valuable insight into why you are not getting the high-quality rest that your body needs to function at its best. What exactly can you expect before, during, and after your sleep test? Keep reading to find out.

Before Your Sleep Test

There are two types of sleep tests: in-lab ones, and at-home ones. In either case, you’ll need to do a little preparation to make sure your test provides accurate results:

  • Shower or avoid using any gels or hairsprays that might interfere with the test.
  • Do not consume any caffeine after lunchtime.
  • Do not consume any alcohol in the last few hours before your study.
  • Do not nap during the day.
  • Wear something comfortable. If you are having a laboratory test, you’re encouraged to bring your own pajamas as well as any personal items that are related to sleep (such as your toothbrush and other nighttime hygiene items). You should also pack a change of clean clothes to wear when you leave in the morning.

During Your Test

If you are undergoing an at-home sleep study, you’ll hook yourself up to a small machine when you go to bed. Be sure to follow any directions carefully so the machine can properly read your vital signs. Then, you’ll simply sleep as you normally do and return the machine to your doctor’s office the following morning.

For an in-lab sleep test, you’ll arrive a couple hours before bedtime. A technician will attach sensors to your head and body. The rooms in sleep labs are designed for comfort, but it is normal for test subjects to have a difficult time falling asleep. That is okay. Your test can still get accurate results even if you are only asleep for a few hours.

After Your Test

You will not know the results of your test right away. It may take a week or two before an expert analyzes the data from it and provides you with an official diagnosis as to why your sleep quality is lacking. When you do receive a diagnosis, you can begin to explore your treatment options. For patients who have sleep apnea, oral appliance therapy is often a way to experience long-lasting relief from their condition.

Do you suspect that you have sleep apnea in Melbourne or another sleep disorder? A simple test could be you first step on the path to higher-quality rest.
