Man snoring, could benefit from anti-snoring device in Boca Raton

If you struggle with chronic snoring, you should certainly seek a solution. Treatment is even more important if your snoring is a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Fortunately, for most patients, the best way to end their snoring is as simple as the use of an anti-snoring device in Boca Raton. Let’s discuss some popular types of devices.

Mandibular Advancement Devices

A mandibular advancement device (MAD) moves the lower jaw, the mandible, slightly forward. By doing so, it helps to keep the airway open at night, thereby reducing or eliminating snoring and allowing the person wearing it to enjoy uninterrupted, high-quality sleep.

It is possible to purchase a MAD over the counter. However, such devices may not provide a perfect fit, which means they can be uncomfortable. Their performance can also fall short of expectations. Most patients find that a MAD from a sleep apnea expert, such as a dentist who has been trained in how to offer sleep apnea therapy, is the ideal way to end their nighttime breathing problems.

One potential downside to MADs is the fact that some patients report jaw discomfort. Fortunately, most people eventually adjust to their device and find it to be a much more convenient option than a CPAP machine.

Tongue Stabilization Device

A tongue stabilization device (TSD) isolates the tongue, pulling it slightly forward to open the airway and facilitate easier breathing. TSDs are not used as commonly as MADs, but they do have the slight advantage of not causing jaw discomfort. However, the trade-off is that some individuals find it difficult to relax while their tongue is held in a position that they are not accustomed to.

Just like MADs, TSDs are more effective when they are provided by a trained expert rather than purchased over the counter.

Anti-Snoring Chin Straps

Anti-snoring chin straps are available from many over the counter retailers. They are constructed out of fabric, and they are typically secured around the head with Velcro. They supposedly work by keeping the mouth closed during sleep in order to prevent snoring.

Unfortunately, research has never proven that chin straps are an effective way to prevent snoring, and they certainly should not be used as a home remedy for sleep apnea.

Which Device Is Right for You?

After a conversation with a dentist who specializes in treating sleep apnea in Boca Raton, you should be able to make a well-informed decision about how to address your nighttime breathing problems. In most cases, a MAD is the ideal option. There are numerous types of prescription MADs, so your treatment provider will weigh the pros and cons of various devices before recommending a specific one for you.

Snoring and sleep apnea can put a damper on your health and your relationships. Fortunately, a small oral appliance may be all you need to find relief.
