How Much Does Sleep Testing Cost?
January 13, 2022Have you been experiencing symptoms of a sleep disorder lately? You may be drowsy all the time, or perhaps your partner has complained about your snoring. You would like to visit a doctor to find out what’s going on, but you are concerned about being able to pay for sleep testing. Don’t worry — sleeping testing may be well within the boundaries of your budget! Let’s discuss the average cost of a sleep test and how your medical insurance might help.
Average Costs for Sleep Testing
The cost of your sleep test will depend largely on the type of testing and the billing methods used by the sleep laboratory. In-lab sleep tests tend to cost around $500 – $3,000, whereas an in-home sleep test costs only $300 – $600 on average. Also, keep in mind that some sleep labs charge separately for the test and its interpretation. At Florida Dental Sleep Disorders, we typically do in-home sleep tests rather than in-lab sleep tests.
While all of those numbers can seem intimidating, the good news is that most medical insurance policies cover sleep testing! You may end up paying absolutely nothing out of pocket. If you do have to pay part of the cost, you may end up owing as little as $50 – $150.
Using Your Medical Insurance for Sleep Testing
Here are some factors you should consider when you are thinking about using your medical insurance to pay for your sleep test:
- Network status can make a difference. If a sleep lab is in-network with your insurance, you will likely pay less out of pocket than if you visit an out of network lab. You might be able to use your insurance policy’s online patient portal to find an in-network sleep clinic.
- You might need a referral. Some insurance policies require a referral from your primary care provider (PCP) before they will cover a sleep test.
- Have you met your deductible? Many insurance policies require that you pay out of pocket for medical services up to a certain dollar amount each year. For some policies, the deductible is thousands of dollars. If you have a healthcare savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA), you may be able to use those funds to cover the deductible.
- A sleep test is just the beginning. While you are researching your insurance, you may want to find out if it will cover treatment for various sleep disorders. For example, you should ask if it covers oral sleep appliances or other therapies for sleep apnea in Vero Beach.
A sleep test may be the first step on your journey toward enjoying higher-quality rest. Although the test costs a significant amount of money, your medical insurance may be able to significantly reduce your out of pocket obligation.
